Solomon Islands National Museum Staff Contribute to Major Gallery Reopening at The Met in New York

Shirley Mwanesalua and Patricia Vaegi George of the Solomon Islands National Museum recently represented Solomon Islands at the re-launch of the Arts of Oceania, galleries at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

The reimagined galleries, part of the Michael C. Rockefeller Wing showcases over 650 works from across the Pacific, including many artifacts from the Solomon Islands. Closed since 2021 for major renovations, the galleries now feature updated displays, new acquisitions, and contemporary commissions by Indigenous artists.

Shirley and Patricia played a key role in providing cultural insight by contributing detailed captions for Solomon Islands artifacts, enhancing the visitor experience and highlighting the rich cultural context behind each piece.

In recognition of their contribution, both were invited to the official relaunch events, where they presented to large audiences in New York. Their involvement reflects a strong partnership between the Solomon Islands National Museum and The Met.
