Australia has announced a commitment of SBD60 million in direct funding support to upgrade and maintain key roads across Solomon Islands. This contribution to the National Transport Fund will support preparations for the 54th Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting in Honiara and help reconnect rural communities, particularly in Malaita Province, to essential economic opportunities.
The funding will go toward a list of priority roads identified by the Solomon Islands Government, with eight roads in Honiara and three in Malaita already selected for repairs and upgrades. Importantly, the work will be carried out by local contractors, helping to boost jobs and income for the private sector.
This announcement builds on past achievements. In 2024, Australia’s support helped reopen the South Road from Auki to Bina, reconnecting families, farmers, and businesses across the region, demonstrating the transformative power of quality road infrastructure.
Over the past five years, Australia has invested more than SBD5 billion in over 500 development projects in Solomon Islands. Through the ongoing Solomon Islands–Australia Partnership, both nations continue working together to build a more connected, resilient, and prosperous future for all Solomon Islanders.
