Australia has reaffirmed its commitment to climate action and sustainable development in Solomon Islands by announcing an additional SBD38 million in funding for the Tina River Hydropower Development Project, the country’s flagship renewable energy initiative.
The announcement was made by Australia’s Minister for Pacific Affairs, Hon. Pat Conroy MP, the project as Australia’s largest climate investment in the Pacific, with a total contribution now reaching approximately SBD402 million.
The Tina River Hydropower Project is expected to significantly reduce Solomon Islands’ reliance on imported diesel for electricity, lower energy costs, and improve energy reliability in Honiara. A key component of the project includes a 22km transmission line, financed through the Australian Infrastructure Financing Facility for the Pacific (AIFFP), that will connect the hydropower site to Honiara’s power grid.
The Tina River Hydropower Development Project is being delivered through a strong international partnership, co-financed by the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, Asian Development Bank, Government of Australia, Green Climate Fund, Korea EX-IM Bank’s Economic Development Cooperation Fund, and the World Bank.
As climate change continues to impact Pacific Island nations, the Solomon Islands–Australia Partnership is taking real action, investing in renewable energy and supporting resilient infrastructure for a greener, more sustainable future.
