The new Buala Market is nearing completion, and it’s already being celebrated as a safe, inclusive, and accessible space for women, families, and the wider community.
During a recent site visit, Member of Parliament for Buala and Minister for Women, Youth, Children and Family Affairs, Honourable Cathy Nori, expressed her appreciation for the market’s design and facilities, especially those that cater to the needs of women and families.
Joined by the Premier for Isabel, Hon. Nori met with local workers currently constructing the market, as well as vendors who are excited about the new space. The market is supported by Australia’s Provincial Markets Redevelopment Program under the Solomon Islands–Australia Partnership.
Once completed, the new Buala Market will provide a modern trading space for more than 150 vendors. It includes separate toilets, showers, and changing rooms, as well as water tank storage and lower bench stalls designed to accommodate vendors using wheelchairs.
“I’m proud of this world-class market. It’s a space for communities to earn income and build better lives,” said Hon. Cathy Nori.
Designed with climate resilience in mind, the market includes a seawall for coastal protection and infrastructure built to withstand the challenges of the future, ensuring it remains a vital hub for economic activity, connection, and empowerment for years to come.
