Initial construction works on the 9.2 km China-Aid Auki Road Rehabilitation Project (Kwaibala Bridge-Kiluโufi Hospital and 16 feeder road networks) are making steady progress.
The contractor, China Civil Engineering Construction Cooperation (CCECC), since receiving the Development Consent two months ago, has mobilized their resources, including local recruits, for this critical phase.
CCECCโs main scope since past weeks includes river channel improvement, retaining walls, slope protection walls, shoulder protection walls and ditch work, some of which have already been completed while others are steadily progressing.

These are key features of this project expected to improve drainage systems throughout Auki Town, facilitating efficient water management and safeguarding against erosion and flooding.
The Ministry of Infrastructure Developmentsโ (MIDโs) Transport Infrastructure Management Services Division (TIMSD) also recognizes the challenges faced which resulted in delays due to utility lines and pipes (Solomon Water, Solomon Power, Our Telekom and properties that should have been relocated inwards to pave the way for the road expansion as outlined in the realignment plan.

The ministry and CCECC management are working closely with the Malaita Provincial Government and utility service companies to resolve the delays as soon as possible.

A key highlight of this project is the use of top-quality materials, akin to those utilized in the newly constructed roads in East Honiara and within Honiaraโs CBD. Auki Road will be sealed with a 50-millimetre-thick asphalt concrete pavement, ensuring durability and longevity. It is expected to serve the Auki Road users effectively for 10 to 20 years, significantly enhancing the local transportation network.
