UNDP Officials Pay Courtesy Visit to the Speaker of the National Parliament of Solomon Islands

Two representatives from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Ms. Chaw Su Aye, Lead Consultant with UNDP, and Ms. Beverly Duffy, Clerk Assistant – Committees of the New South Wales Parliament, paid a courtesy visit this morning to the Hon. Speaker of the National Parliament of Solomon Islands, Mr. Patteson J. Oti.

The purpose of the visit was to brief the Speaker on the upcoming Functional Assessment for the National Parliament of Solomon Islands, which UNDP is conducting as part of its continued support for strengthening parliamentary institutions across the Pacific region.

Accompanying the Speaker during the meeting was the Clerk to Parliament, Mr. Jefferson Hallu. The brief discussion centred on the objectives and scope of the assessment, which seeks to examine service delivery, human resource management, training systems, and the overall institutional capacity of Parliament.

The Functional Assessment will run from 1–5 September 2025 at the National Parliament of Solomon Islands and follows a similar process recently conducted at the Kiribati Parliament. It aims to identify service delivery gaps, review staff capacity, and recommend targeted interventions to strengthen parliamentary support systems.

Through this initiative, UNDP continues its long-standing commitment to enhancing the effectiveness of Pacific Parliaments by empowering Members and staff through professional development, peer learning, and strategic partnerships.

The Speaker welcomed the assessment, noting its importance in guiding institutional reforms and building long-term capacity for the Parliament to better serve the people of Solomon Islands.
