Japanese Experts here to Install First ever Fruit Treatment Technology for Solomon Islands

Honiara, Solomon Islands, September 3, 2025.

A major milestone for Solomon Islands agriculture began today as three Japanese specialists arrived in Honiara to start the installation of the country’s first-ever Vapor Heat Treatment (VHT) facility a revolutionary technology designed to unlock global export markets for local fruit growers.

In a high-level meeting at the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAL), the experts met with Permanent Secretary Dr. Samson Viulu and senior MAL officials to commence the installation of this state-of-the-art facility at Henderson.

“With the arrival of VHT technology, we are stepping into a new era of export readiness,” said Dr. Viulu.

“This breakthrough offers our farmers the opportunity to shift from subsistence farming to commercial production, increase their yields, and explore new market opportunities regionally and internationally.”

The installation of the VHT machine represents a great achievement for the country and a milestone for the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock. It is the result of tireless hard work and dedication from the MAL team, who have been committed to bringing this cutting-edge technology to fruition.

“The public will finally see progress of the VHT machine installation is happening, and it will hopefully increase production at the farm level as its open doors for farmers across the nation,” Dr. Viulu added.

Vapor Heat Treatment (VHT) is an advanced, chemical-free quarantine method that uses controlled hot, humid air to eliminate pests like fruit flies from produce. Unlike traditional methods, VHT ensures consumer safety while preserving the natural quality, taste, and appearance of fruits and vegetables.

The machine itself is highly sophisticated, requiring precise installation and calibration. The three specialists from Japan bring the expertise necessary to fine-tune the equipment, ensuring it is properly adapted to treat a wide variety of fruits.

MAL plans to extend invitations to stakeholders for specialized VHT training, ensuring that local farmers, exporters, and biosecurity officers are fully equipped to maximize the benefits of this technology.

Once fully operational, the facility will empower farmers to increase commercial production, tapping into export markets with confidence and quality assurance.

This initiative is not just a technological upgrade it’s a transformational step for Solomon Islands agriculture, fostering sustainable growth and regional competitiveness.
