Solomon Islands has been elected as a member of the Asia-Pacific Group in the 29th International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Council for the term 2025โ€“2027.

The country will assume its role from 11 September 2025 for the next two years, succeeding the Kingdom of Tonga, which served on the Council from 2023โ€“2025.

This marks the first time Solomon Islands has been elected to the IRENA Council as a representative of the Pacific within the Asia-Pacific Group since the Councilโ€™s establishment.

The 29th IRENA Council Meeting was held in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE), from 10โ€“12 September 2025. Discussions covered the IRENA Secretariatโ€™s work programme, global energy security, support for next-generation renewable technologies, strengthening regional manufacturing capabilities, and the evolving geopolitical and economic landscape of renewable energy supply chains, with particular focus on the solar PV sector.

Solomon Islandsโ€™ Ambassador to the UAE and Permanent Representative to IRENA, His Excellency Cornelius Walegerea, said:

โ€œAs a member of the Council representing the Pacific, Solomon Islands looks forward to working with IRENA during its tenure to advocate and amplify the call for the international community to meet their climate change commitments and support Pacific Island countries with their renewable energy needs.โ€

The Solomon Islands delegation to the 29th IRENA Council was led by H.E. Cornelius Walegerea, Ambassador to the UAE and PR to IRENA, and included Mr. Gabriel Aimaea, Director of Energy in the Ministry of Mines, Energy and Rural Electrification, and Mr. Paul Avoso Pandarongo, Second Secretary at the Solomon Islands Embassy in the UAE.
