MAL Strengthens Technical Capacity of Staffs through Training on Crop Irrigation Systems in China

The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAL) proudly announces the successful conclusion of the Training Course on Crop Irrigation Systems, which took place in the People’s Republic of China from July 30 to August 26, 2025. Organized by the Ministry of Commerce of China and facilitated by the esteemed Chinese Academy of Agricultural Mechanization Sciences (CAAMS), the program was designed to elevate the agricultural irrigation practices and food security efforts in the Solomon Islands.

This transformative training program brought together MAL extension officers, NGOs, and farmer organizations, with the goal of enhancing technical knowledge in modern irrigation technologies, strengthening bilateral cooperation, and supporting the agricultural sustainability objectives of the Ministry. The training focused on the core objectives of enhancing participants’ knowledge of irrigation systems and sustainable water management, strengthening skills in crop management and precision agriculture, promoting sustainable agricultural practices to improve yields while conserving natural resources and facilitating knowledge exchange on agricultural innovation and food security strategies between China and Solomon Islands. MAL Research Officer Mary Afuna said, the training delivered profound insights and practical skills, enabling them to gain vital experience in various types of irrigation systems and management.

“Practical training on efficient irrigation systems suitable for smallholder farms, adaptable technologies for rainwater harvesting, addressing the islands’ variable rainfall patterns and enhanced capacity for climate-resilient agricultural practices, equipping farmers to better face climate challenges are her key take-aways from the training. Afuna on behalf of the team pledged their commitment to ensure the successful application of knowledge gained from the training, highlighting adopting small-scale technologies for rural farmers, strengthen research and development through a National Agriculture Research Centre, design farmer training programs leveraging the expertise of trained participants, and developing a National Irrigation Strategy that fosters food security and climate adaptation is a way forward.

This training marks a significant milestone in enhancing the agricultural capacity and food security of the participating members.

For that MAL is grateful and expresses sincere gratitude to the Ministry of Commerce of China, CAAMS, and all facilitators involved in making this training a success. The knowledge and skills acquired will have lasting impacts on the agriculture sector, promoting sustainable practices and improving resilience in the face of climatic challenges in our Nation
