𝐆𝐍𝐔𝐓 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐦𝐬 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐥𝐞

Honiara, Solomon Islands, 8 October 2025 – The Government of National Unity and Transformation (GNUT) assures the people of Solomon Islands that, despite recent media reports of instability, its members remain united and fully committed to supporting Prime Minister Hon. Jeremiah Manele.

Members of the GNUT Caucus have discussed recent issues and emphasized that, even when they have different views on some issues, they are working together for the good of all Solomon Islanders. During the recent caucus meeting, leaders of the coalition parties resolved to strengthen communication among the parties to ensure effective governance and unity for the people of Solomon Islands.

It is important to note that GNUT has been in office for just one year and has already faced two motions of no confidence. Despite these challenges, the government remains steadfast in advancing its development agenda for the nation. Recent public attention has focused on ministerial reshuffles, which some have linked to the handling of the sufferance wharves, including Leroy Wharf.

The Government is aware of public concerns about the operations of these wharves including perceptions that such operations may weaken national security, reduce government revenue, and undermine Solomon Ports’ authority by allowing unmonitored trade. These concerns are taken seriously. A dedicated taskforce is currently reviewing the operations of all sufferance wharves including Leroy wharf to ensure compliance with the Customs Act, Ports Act, and other relevant legislation. The taskforce is expected to complete its report by the end of October.

While this review is ongoing, the Government has decided that the sufferance wharves and Leroy Wharf will continue operating to avoid disruption to commercial activities and major development projects. These facilities handled over 3,022,740 tonnes of cargo and collected millions of dollars in revenue, supporting key investors and infrastructure developments. The Government recognizes that any sudden suspension of operations would impact project timelines, increase business costs, and slow overall economic activity.

At the same time, GNUT emphasizes that all vessels and cargo using the sufferance wharves and Leroy Wharf will continue to undergo standard reporting, inspection, and clearance procedures under the oversight of the Comptroller of Customs and Biosecurity to ensure full compliance with national laws.Supervised inspections, documentation verification, and enforcement of tax and duty collection remain in place to safeguard public revenue and maintain border security.

GNUT remains focused on maintaining stability, ensuring continuity, and delivering effective governance for the people of Solomon Islands while addressing legitimate public concerns regarding accountability and the protection of national interest.
