The Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development (MEHRD) has issued guidance for schools affected by Tropical Cyclone Maila, as the Ministry continues to prioritise the safety, wellbeing, and continuity of learning of all students.
MEHRD extends its concern and support to all schools, teachers, parents, and students impacted by the cyclone, particularly in Western Province, Choiseul Province, parts of Isabel Province, and Guadalcanal Province.

𝙎𝙘𝙝𝙤𝙤𝙡 𝙧𝙚𝙤𝙥𝙚𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙜𝙪𝙞𝙙𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙚:
• Schools with no damage may reopen on Monday, 13 April 2026.
• Schools with minor impact may remain closed for up to one week to allow for clean up activities and are expected to reopen on Monday, 20 April 2026.
• Schools with moderate damage may remain closed for up to two weeks while assessments and necessary remedial actions are undertaken.
• Schools with major damage will remain closed until further notice, pending safety assessments and required repairs.
𝙈𝙀𝙃𝙍𝘿 𝙞𝙨 𝙘𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙤𝙣 𝙖𝙡𝙡 𝙖𝙛𝙛𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙨𝙘𝙝𝙤𝙤𝙡𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙚𝙙𝙪𝙘𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙫𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙧𝙨 𝙩𝙤 𝙪𝙧𝙜𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙡𝙮 𝙧𝙚𝙥𝙤𝙧𝙩:
• Damage to school infrastructure,
• Loss of teaching and learning materials,
• The status of boarding school food supplies,
• The welfare of affected teachers and staff.
Parents and guardians are strongly advised not to send children back to school until schools have been officially confirmed as safe and ready to resume classes.
MEHRD is working closely with Provincial Education Authorities, the National Disaster Operations Centre and relevant partners to assess the extent of damage and coordinate appropriate support to schools and communities.
