The Solomon Islands High Commissioner to Papua New Guinea, His Excellency William Soaki, visited Solomon Islands medical students on the evening of Saturday, 18 March 2026, at the University of Papua New Guinea Taurama Campus.
High Commissioner Soaki was accompanied by Second Secretary Ms. Gwen Halemaku and staff from the Solomon Islands High Commission.
During the visit, the High Commissioner engaged in discussions with the students regarding their welfare and overall wellbeing while pursuing their studies in Papua New Guinea. Currently, there are seven undergraduate students and four postgraduate students studying under Solomon Islands Government scholarships, along with four privately sponsored students. These students are enrolled in their second, third, and final years, undertaking studies in medicine, pharmaceutical science, and other related health fields.

In his remarks, the High Commissioner commended the students for their dedication, hard work, and commitment to pursuing careers in the medical field. He emphasized the vital role they will play in strengthening the Solomon Islands health sector and, most importantly, in saving lives in the future.
He encouraged the students to remain focused on their studies, uphold the laws of the host country, and adhere to university rules and regulations while continuing to strive for excellence.
The visit also provided an opportunity for students to share their concerns and challenges. In response, the High Commissioner assured them of the Missionโs continued support.
High Commissioner Soaki also acknowledged and praised the Solomon Islands Medical Students Association (SIMSA) for its ongoing commitment to fostering unity and support among students, as well as its strong collaboration with the High Commission through various initiatives, including annual independence celebrations.
The visit concluded with a dinner shared between the High Commissioner, his staff, and the students.
