Honiara, Solomon Islands, 29 April 2026 – The Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development (MEHRD), through the NDOC Education Sector and the MEHRD Emergency Operations Centre, has deployed two Education Sector engineering teams to Choiseul and Western Provinces to carry out detailed structural assessments of schools severely affected by Tropical Cyclone Maila.
These assessments are now underway and are very important in helping the Ministry and its partners determine which school buildings are safe, which require urgent repairs and which may need temporary learning spaces while recovery work continues.
MEHRD is calling on school principals, school committees, Education Provider officers and community leaders in the affected areas to support the engineers when they arrive by providing access to school facilities and support them with relevant information on damages caused by the cyclone.
The Ministry also acknowledges the continued support of its partners, including DFAT, MFAT, UNICEF and Save the Children, as response and recovery efforts continue.
MEHRD thanks school leaders, teachers, parents and communities for their patience, cooperation and commitment during this difficult time.
To our students, remain hopeful and continue learning where classes have resumed. For schools still affected, the Ministry and partners are working to identify safe and practical options for learning to continue. Together, we will keep learning at the centre of our recovery and ensure teaching and learning continue safely.
