KASU GAS: Convenience turned Environmental issue in Honiara

The use of butane gas once hailed as a convenient and affordable solution for cooking, has now evolved into a significant environmental issue in the Solomon Islands. The popularity of butane gas, particularly in the form of portable “kasu” gas canisters, has led to widespread adoption across communities. However, this convenience has come at a considerable cost.

As these canisters are often discarded carelessly after use, they have become a dominant source of pollution, littering streets, clogging drains, and spoiling the natural beauty of the islands. The collection of empty butane cans poses not only an aesthetic problem but also a potential hazard, as the leftover gas in some canisters can be flammable or toxic.

This growing environmental concern highlights the need for improved waste management practices and increased awareness about the impact of improper disposal of these once-convenient items.
