GNUT responses to Wale: Let’s set the records right
The Government has set the records straight and provide clarification on the issues raised in the Opposition Leader Hon. Mathew Wale’s melodramatic article regarding the government delegation trip to Australia led by the Deputy Prime Minister.
While it is accurate that Cabinet did not formally sanction the trip, it is essential to note that the Acting Prime Minister, Hon Bradley Tovosia, granted permission for the travel. This decision was made in light of ongoing engagements directly related to important national issue regarding land on Guadalcanal, but more importantly, peace and security of our country.
For example, Cabinet has already approved the sum of $140 m to settle the issue. Such significant transactions necessitate thorough due diligence and consideration, which aligns with the purpose of this trip. Additionally, the review paper on the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) program, currently before Cabinet, was deferred pending further information; therefore, this trip is also for MPs to discuss issues surrounding PALM as well.
The government statement further explains, the assertion made by Hon Wale that the trip lacks financial oversight is misleading. The ministers and MPs participating in the Brisbane delegation are doing so as part of their overseas engagements, which are fully funded by international organizations and development partners. It is disheartening to see Hon Wale deliberately misinforming the public about a valuable cost-saving initiative undertaken by the government. As such, portraying the trip as a misuse of taxpayer funds fails to recognize the strategic partnerships at play and its importance to nation building.
Furthermore, it is crucial to emphasize that the DPM and members of the delegation are dedicated to implementing Cabinet decisions related to critical government business.
Deputy Prime Minister Tovosia assures the public of the government’s unwavering commitment to implementing its policy priorities for the benefit of the people of Solomon Islands.
“Despite the cheap political propaganda employed by the Opposition Leader, this administration remains steadfast in its mission to serve the best interests of the nation and uphold the integrity of our governing processes.
The actions taken during this trip exemplify GNUT’s dedication to transparency, accountability, and effective governance.
The government invite Hon Wale to… “join us in constructive dialogue rather than resorting to unfounded accusations and political manoeuvring, as it ultimately detracts from the essential work needed to advance our country’s interests.”
The Commissioner of Lands and Attorney General met with Patrick Wong and his lawyers today and discussed ways forward in reaching an agreement. Also, present in this meeting were Hon. Oliver Salopuka a director of Levers Solomon Limited and the Mr. Barnabas Henson, Advisor to the Leader of Opposition on National Security who is also the community representative of Levers Solomon Limited.
