HCC PLANS TO CELEBRATE HONIARA CITY DAY ON SEPTEMBER 29, 2025
The Honiara City Council (HCC) is set to mark a significant milestone in its history by celebrating its first-ever Honiara City Day on September 29, 2025.
HCC Executive members and officials have recently passed the proposal and planned a series of activities, including a parade, cultural performances, speeches, sports, and community engagement programs, to foster unity and civic pride among Honiara residents and visitors.
Honiara City Day will commemorate the official establishment of Honiara as a recognized city and the transition of governance from Honiara Town Council to Honiara City Council, highlighting the progress and development achieved over the years.
The Second Appointed Day is a traditional Solomon Islands event that provincial governments observe to celebrate their establishment. For Honiara City, the 2025 celebration marks a crucial moment to reflect on its growth, challenges, and future aspirations. Honiara City Council was established following the commencement of the Honiara City Council Act on 29 September 1999.
Mayor Eddie Siapu expressed his excitement for the upcoming event, emphasizing Honiara’s pivotal role as the capital and urban center of the Solomon Islands.
“This celebration is not just about our past achievements, but also a reminder of the work that lies ahead in making Honiara a vibrant, inclusive, and sustainable city,” the HCC Mayor said.
Residents are encouraged to participate in the festivities, expected to draw attention nationwide. The celebration will also highlight the city’s commitment to improving infrastructure, services, and governance as it continues to grow as the heart of the Solomon Islands.
Meanwhile, the Honiara City Council will submit a formal request to the Minister of Home Affairs for final approval of the Honiara City Day.
