USP SI Open Day attracts record crowd at new state-of-the-art campus

Over a thousand students from 18 high schools across the Solomon Islands were excited to participate in The University of the South Pacific (USP) Open Day, held today at the new King George campus in Honiara.

This year’s Open Day was particularly special, as it marked the first formal event at the new state-of-the-art campus, drawing the largest crowd ever recorded at a USP Open Day in the Hapi Isles.

The USP Open Day is an important annual event designed to provide prospective students with essential information to help them make informed decisions about their higher education goals.

It outlines the various pathways available to students, guiding them through joining the university, excelling in their studies, completing their programs, and graduating with distinction.

USP Solomon Islands Campus Director, Dr Billy Fitoo, highlighted that hosting the Open Day at the new campus symbolises the university’s growth since its establishment in the Hapi Isles in 1971.

“Our Solomon Islands Campus has become the only higher learning institution in the country offering digital delivery of internationally accredited programmes and courses. We now boast modern and digitally advanced learning and teaching resources, where students can attend lectures face-to-face here at the King George or Lawson Tama campuses, virtually from one of our 13 other campuses, or online through our Moodle Learning platform,” he said.

Dr Fitoo added, “We take pride in our commitment to developing Solomon Islands’ human resources and ensuring that everyone’s potential is fully realised”.

The USP Solomon Islands Open Day was a success, with students getting a glimpse of university life, and exploring the high-end facilities, infrastructure, and services offered at the new campus.

Chief Guest, James Dolarii, the Chief Executive Officer of the Solomon Islands Chamber of Commerce reflected on his academic journey, sharing his struggles and achievements over the years. He offered heartfelt encouragement to current and high school students, emphasising the importance of education.

“Your presence here today warms my heart and assures me that our future is brighter. I hope you are inspired by the stories of those who came before you, and that your stories will one day inspire others,” Dolarii remarked.

He further reiterated that by attending the USP Open Day, students are now part of USP history, stating, “I’ve been assured that you are the first group of people to witness this amazing university.”

Under the theme “Our People, Our Stories,” this year’s Solomon Islands Open Day was an eye-opener for thousands of students, teachers, parents, and guardians who visited the King George campus. It stands as a pivotal moment in shaping the future leaders of both the country and the Pacific region.

Students in Years 12 and 13 were thrilled to be part of the event, exploring the opportunities that await them at USP.

Similarly, teachers were equally excited to participate in this significant event and expressed optimism about pursuing further studies to gain new skills and upgrade their qualifications at the new campus.

One of the highlights of the day was the vibrant display of traditional attire and captivating cultural performances by the Student Associations from different provinces of the Solomon Islands.

Following the success of the Open Day, USP Solomon Islands is now preparing for the official opening of the new King George Campus, scheduled for Thursday, 3 October 2024.
