HCC MAYOR HIGHLIGHTS IMPORTANCE OF HANDWASHING FOR PUBLIC HEALTH

Honiara City Council Lord Mayor, Cr. Eddie Kasuteé Siapu has stressed the importance of proper handwashing as a key measure in preventing the spread of diseases and safeguarding the health of families, schools, and communities.

Speaking at a recent event (Thursday 24th, October 2024) to promote health and hygiene practices, the Lord Mayor reminded residents that handwashing is one of the most effective, affordable, and accessible methods to prevent the transmission of illnesses, especially during flu season and amidst other contagious outbreaks.

He expressed that as we progress with hand washing, we need to strengthen our hygiene practices to ensure health is upheld every time.

“We must all play our part in promoting good hygiene practices, not only today but every day,” the mayor said during the celebration.

He said clean hands avoid infections through bacteria, diseases, and the spread of harmful germs. Handwashing reduces diarrhea diseases by up to 30% and acute respiration infections by 20%.

“Practicing proper hygiene will create a healthier learning environment and protect students, teachers, and our communities from illness,” he explained.

He articulated that let us pledge to wash our hands with soap regularly, especially after using the toilets, before eating, and after coughing or sneezing.

“As we reflect on the question, why are clean hands still important? Let us make a personal commitment to promote hand hygiene and encourage others to do the same,” the mayor expressed.

He acknowledged Live & Learn and its partners for commemorating the auspicious day of handwashing.
