Celebrating One-Year Anniversary of Sport City Facilities

November 19th, this week marks one year of the opening ceremony of the 2023 Pacific Games. Minister of Home Affairs Hon. Isikeli Tuwai Vave Jnr. commemorated the remarkable legacy of Sport City, emphasizing its role in uniting the community and fostering a spirit of collaboration among Solomon Islanders.

“While our memories may fade over time, the facilities at Sport City stand as a constant testament to the success of the Games and the unity generated by our collective effort,” Minister Vave stated.

“The exceptional contributions made by Solomon Islanders were instrumental in receiving commendations from the Pacific Games Council, as well as the 24 teams and over 5,000 participants.”

Looking ahead, the minister underlined the importance of protecting the world-class facilities established for current and future generations. “These are the best sports facilities in the Pacific, and I encourage everyone in Honiara to take full advantage of them,” he said.

“Utilizing these spaces will not only promote health and well-being but also combat the alarming statistics of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) affecting our population—an average of eight lives lost daily.”

Hon. Vave emphasized the need for increased physical activity and healthy lifestyles as vital tools to counteract NCDs. “Let us all commit to being active more often and utilizing Sport City and other available venues, including walking paths and sidewalks. This can literally save lives.”

In response to recent concerns regarding facility hire fees, the minister clarified that there has been no increase since June 2024 when the National Sports Council (NSC) approved the current fees, which have been discounted for different user groups. He urged the community to disregard any misleading reports regarding fee increases.

“The NSC is currently reviewing the hire fees in light of a government subsidy that is pending parliamentary approval as part of the 2025 budget process.”

Minister Vave appeal to communities in Honiara to cherish and care for the Sport City facilities:

“These facilities belong to the Government on behalf of present and future generations of Solomon Islanders. I urge everyone to use them responsibly and look after them as if they were your own.”
