Police in Auki, Malaita Province, recently conducted an operation and raided homebrew outlets in response to calls made by community leaders to curb crimes.

Malaita Province’s Provincial Police Commander (PPC), Chief Superintendent Tex Tafoa, said the raid was carried out after police received information of illegal brewing of home brew (kwaso) that triggered many unwanted behaviours causing fear and threat to women, elderly people and children in the community.

Chief Superintendent Tafoa confirmed their team raided several identified kwaso producers and confiscated 5 X 20 liters of kwaso and cylinders. The kwaso producers escaped prior to police team arrival.

The Malaita provincial commander appealed to those who engaged in kwaso cooking and those who causes problems to refrain and listen to their leaders.

“Kwaso is the main issue which causes domestic violence at homes and disturbances to community when people are drunk. It also posed major health risk,” PPC Tafoa said.

He said as the festive season approaches; communities are hoping for a safe and peaceful celebration that is free from unnecessary disturbances.

“Police will maintain operations, and anyone caught committing an offense will be dealt with immediately,” PPC Tafoa said.

He urged all community leaders in the province to support the police in their festive operations to ensure peaceful and meaningful celebration.
