The recent surprising information by the Minister for Police, Hon. Jimson Tanangada, during the 2025 Appropriation Bill 2024 debates, has caused frustration among the people of Solomon Islands. In response to a question from Opposition Leader Hon. Mathew Wale, the Minister disclosed that the price of a Police Clearance document, which currently stands at SBD 90, will increase to SBD 300 in 2025.
This announcement has not been well-received by many Solomon Islanders, especially those already grappling with financial challenges. While the Minister described the increase as a “little increase,” many argue that an additional SBD 210 is a substantial burden for ordinary citizens. A local resident from Honiara voiced their concern, stating, “SBD 210 is not a little increase. Not everyone is an MP like you. Students and many others will find this a problem.”
The hike has raised concerns about the affordability of essential services, particularly for students and low-income individuals who rely on Police Clearance for various administrative purposes, including employment and travel. Many citizens feel that the increase will disproportionately affect the most vulnerable, adding to the already heavy financial strain many face.
Some members of the public have suggested that a more moderate increase, such as raising the fee to SBD 100, would be more reasonable and easier to bear. The public hopes the government will reconsider the decision, taking into account the economic reality faced by everyday Solomon Islanders.Â
