In yesterday’s parliamentary debate on the Constitution (Amendment) (Constituent Assembly Sitting) Bill, the Member of Parliament for Central Honiara strongly called on the Prime Minister to stop inviting to host major events in the country after 2025.
This bill which was introduced by the Prime Minister, seeks to move the current deadline of the Constituent Assembly Sitting from December 31st, 2024, to December 31st, 2026. According to Hon. Lilo, they will need money in 2026 to have this assembly, so not having any major events will put the country on a better financial point.
During the discussion, the MP for Central Honiara emphasized that the country needs to prioritize its financial readiness before committing to this Constituent Assembly Sitting. “If we are to do this in 2026, then we need to be ready financially. Stop inviting big events to the country,” the MP stated.
The MP also suggested that seeking external assistance, either from donors or other partners, could be a viable solution to support the country’s financial preparedness for such events.
His comments shows the growing concern over the financial challenges the country faces while trying to balance development with hosting international events.
Solomon Islands is expected to host two major events in 2025.
