During the motion of Sine Die in Parliament, the Member of Parliament for East Malaita and Minister of the Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID), Hon. Maelanga informed the House that his ministry is in the process of introducing a significant bill next year concerning building codes.
Although the ministry had aimed to bring the bill forward this year, time constraints prevented its timely submission. The proposed legislation is expected to establish building codes that will apply across Honiara and other provinces, ensuring that all buildings meet the strict construction standards of Australia and New Zealand. The bill will also require the use of approved materials to further enhance the safety and sustainability of buildings in the country.
Hon. Maelanga emphasized the importance of the bill, describing it as a comprehensive and substantial piece of legislation that will help raise the standard of construction across the nation. The bill is seen as an important step towards improving the safety and resilience of buildings in Solomon Islands.
“Old buildings that are not qualified with the requirements set by my ministry in the building codes will be demolished,” he added.
