The Guadalcanal Vector-Borne Disease Control Program (VBDCP) has launched its core activity for the yearโ€”the mass distribution of Long-Lasting Insecticidal Nets (LLINs).

The campaign began at Selwyn College, following a rise in malaria cases at the school.

As the first province to receive the newly arrived bednets, Guadalcanal prioritized Selwyn College as the initial recipient.

A total of 640 nets were distributed, with 520 allocated for students and 120 for staff and their families.

The initiative included demonstrations on the proper use of LLINs, emphasizing their importance in preventing malaria.

Community members were also urged to use and maintain the bednets, which are expected to last for three years.

This mass distribution aims to cover schools, antenatal mothers, and communities across Guadalcanal, targeting at least 80% coverage to maximize malaria reduction efforts.

Mr. Charlie Niboth Iro’ofa, GP Programme Manager for VBDCP acknowledges the support of the Global Fund for procuring the bednets and World Vision Solomon Islands, the principal recipient responsible for facilitating their delivery to the country.

He also acknowledge Selwyn College Principal, Mr. Edwin Rogemana for partnering with the Guadalcanal VBDCP, accommodating the malaria team, and providing essential support during the distribution. This collaboration highlights the importance of collective efforts in combating malaria and safeguarding community health.

Mr. Charlie then acknowledged Dr. Ray Seleso, Guadalcanal Provincial Health Director for the logistical supports ensuring the GP VBDCP to deliver the bednets according to their schedules.

According to Mr. Charlie, the bednets distribution will continue around all six health zones of Guadalcanal Province this year.

He urges communities around Guadalcanal to listen out for further information on their schedule sometimes this month.

The GP Programme Manager for VBDCP strongly urges communities and families in Guadalcanal to take extra prevention from malaria.
