This morning, a significant milestone was achieved in Malaita Province as the Honorable Manaseh Maelanga, Minister of the Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID), officially launched the Koa, Bio1, and Bio2 bridges in West Kwarae. The ceremony, held on behalf of the Solomon Islands Government and the World Bank, marked the successful completion of these critical infrastructure projects.

In his address, Hon. Maelanga expressed gratitude to the World Bank for its unwavering support and funding, which made the projects possible. He also acknowledged the Malaita Provincial Government, Reeves (the contractor), SMEC (the engineering firm), the local landowners, and the people of Malaita for their cooperation and patience throughout the construction process.

Their collective efforts ensured the timely and successful completion of the bridges, which are expected to significantly improve connectivity and access for communities in the region.
The World Bank’s commitment to Malaita’s development was further highlighted with the announcement of additional funding for the upgrading of the East Road. The project will extend the current roadworks all the way to Atori, further enhancing transportation infrastructure in the province.
Under the Solomon Islands Roads and Aviation Project (SIRAP), the World Bank is also funding the construction of four new bridges at Bira, Suu Harbour, and Kolofe 1 & 2 in Malaita. These ongoing projects underscore the World Bank’s dedication to supporting sustainable development and improving the quality of life for the people of Malaita.

The launch of the Koa, Bio1, and Bio2 bridges represents a significant step forward in addressing infrastructure challenges in Malaita Province. It reflects the power of collaboration between the national government, international partners, and local communities in driving progress and fostering economic growth.
As the people of West Kwarae celebrate this achievement, the focus now shifts to the continued development of infrastructure that will unlock new opportunities and improve livelihoods across the province.
