MEHRD Denies Allegations of LGBTQ Policies in Education Act

The Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development (MEHRD) has rejected claims by Alfred Sasako that it used Winrock International funding to integrate LGBTQ-related policies into the Education Act 2023. Sasako’s allegations, published in the Solomon Star on February 12, 2025, suggested Winrock’s five-year support may have influenced the Act.

MEHRD called the claims “baseless” and accused Sasako of spreading misinformation to undermine its work. The ministry clarified it has never held official meetings with Winrock International to discuss LGBTQ content in the Education Act, nor has it developed or distributed any school materials promoting LGBTQ topics.

Additionally, MEHRD confirmed LGBTQ content is absent from the National School Curriculum Framework, teacher training programs at SINU, and recent education policies. The Education Act 2023, it emphasized, was drafted through transparent consultations aligned with Solomon Islands’ cultural values and legal standards.

MEHRD PS Dr. Rodie

Permanent Secretary Dr. Franco Rodie condemned the misinformation, urging media to prioritize factual reporting. “We urge journalists to verify claims before publishing, to avoid public confusion,” he stated. MEHRD reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and invited constructive inquiries.
