Malu’u Temporary Market Opens, Supporting Local Vendors During Redevelopment

The newly completed Malu’u Temporary Market opened its doors on Monday, April 7, providing vital space and facilities for local vendors to continue their businesses during the redevelopment of the existing Malu’u Market. The high-quality, locally-built structure, constructed by Alrico Construction Company Ltd, offers essential amenities, including toilets and a wash area, for up to 50 vendors selling fresh produce.

The project, which has created nearly 20 jobs for Solomon Islanders, was carried out with strong community support. Construction Supervisor Freda Waki from Alrico expressed appreciation for the smooth construction process, thanks to the collaboration of the local community and the Market Advisory Group. “We’ve been able to solve any issues and get the project done quickly,” she said.

With the temporary market now in use, the demolition of the existing market building will begin, paving the way for a permanent facility. The new Malu’u Market will be designed to endure environmental challenges, featuring improved infrastructure such as more stalls, water tanks, rain catchment systems, and enhanced sanitation facilities to support both vendors and visitors.
