Josie recently returned from a seminar in China’s Guangdong Province, carrying powerful impressions of the country’s warmth, innovation, and inclusive development. Her journey offered fresh perspectives not only on China but on what’s possible for the Solomon Islands.

“Chinese hospitality, expressed through thoughtful gift-giving, warm smiles, and genuine curiosity, often bridged the language gaps we encountered,” Josie shared. Despite linguistic differences, technology played a crucial role in fostering understanding. “Real-time translation tools weren’t just about words—they became bridges between cultures,” she said, highlighting the potential for global collaboration rooted in mutual respect and open-mindedness.

One of the standout moments for Josie was visiting Wuyi University’s China-Pacific Island Countries Center for Disaster Risk Reduction Cooperation. There, she witnessed Pacific Island youth, including Solomon Islanders, gaining vital skills in disaster preparedness. “Seeing our young people collaborate and learn filled me with pride,” she said. “They’re becoming the resilient leaders our region needs.”

Josie was equally inspired by China’s inclusive economic model. In cities like Shenzhen, young innovators are building careers in tech, fashion, and logistics, while rural areas benefit from modern agriculture and domestic tourism. “What stood out was the dignity given to all forms of work, from app developers to street cleaners,” Josie noted. “It’s a society that values contribution in every form, across all ages.”

She believes these lessons can inspire change back home. “We could support microenterprises like produce delivery or clean-up crews and small ventures that make a big impact,” she said. “With the right support, our people can create dignified, meaningful livelihoods.”
Josie’s thoughtful reflections are a testament to her deep care for the Solomon Islands. Her journey reminds us that with passion, vision, and community-driven action, a brighter, more inclusive future is within reach.
