Strengthening Community-Based Coastal Resource Management in Oceania

The Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources (MFMR) is launching a three-year initiative beginning in February 2025 to promote Community-Based Coastal Resource Management (CBRM) across Oceania. This initiative will focus on diversifying resource management strategies, improving local livelihoods, sharing successful practices across provinces, and building the capacity of extension workers.

As part of the preparatory phase, two CBRM advisors conducted scoping surveys in Makira-Ulawa Province (Tawatana, Tawarodo, Su’uwasi, and Suena) in late April and in Isabel Province (Bansokeo, Kologaru, and Kmaga) in early May, following earlier visits to Guadalcanal and Malaita provinces. The surveys aimed to assess the current situation and identify target communities for future activities.

The visits revealed a clear need for enhanced support for CBRM efforts in both Makira-Ulawa and Isabel. Communities expressed strong interest and actively engaged in discussions about sustainable resource management. MFMR sees this as a promising foundation to revitalize CBRM activities and foster long-term stewardship of coastal resources across the region.
