On May 24, 2025, the Faculty of Education and Humanity at SINU hosted a vibrant and insightful event titled Creative Cultural Performance at the FOPA (Cultural Village), Panatina Campus. Organized as part of the South Pacific Literacy (LIT611) course, the event was coordinated by lecturer Madam Roslyn Oiabu Manipuri. Running from 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm, the performance formed a vital component of the students’ academic assessment in South Pacific Solomon Island Literature.

The main aim of the Creative Cultural Performance was to highlight and celebrate the diverse traditions and customs of Pacific nations including Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea (PNG), Kiribati, and Fiji. The event provided an opportunity for both second-year pre-service and in-service teacher trainees to creatively showcase their understanding of these unique cultures, while also aiding in their course assignments.

Speaking on the importance of the event, Madam Manipuri explained that this ongoing project has been a core part of LIT611 since 2020. “The performance represents the life cycle of humanity, from birth, through childhood, to marriage, and finally, death,” she stated. “It helps teacher trainees to understand how these significant life stages are expressed differently in various Pacific cultures.”

She further emphasized that the event is not simply a cultural display, but an educational tool. Through music, storytelling, traditional attire, and performance, students explored the rich heritage of neighboring island nations. “It is essential for our students to grasp the seriousness and beauty of other cultures,” Madam Manipuri added. “By understanding cultural identity and practices, students also recognize the importance of their own roots.”

The Creative Cultural Performance was not merely a celebration, it was a platform for learning. Students earned assessment marks based on their participation, creativity, and understanding of the cultural elements presented. Ultimately, the event fostered cultural appreciation and awareness, reinforcing the importance of identity and the human life cycle as reflected in the traditions of the Pacific.

This engaging initiative continues to inspire both students and educators to delve deeper into the cultural richness of the Pacific, paving the way for more informed and respectful future teachers.
