Makira-Ulawa Joins PGSD to Boost Health and Education Services

Makira-Ulawa Province has taken a major step forward in public service improvement by signing a Letter of Agreement to join the European Union-funded Provincial Governance and Service Delivery Project (PGSD), implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Solomon Islands.

This marks Makira’s first-ever participation in the initiative, joining provinces like Malaita and RenBel in efforts to enhance essential services such as health, water, sanitation, and education.

The agreement promises tangible outcomes:

  • 1,363 people will directly benefit, including
    • 425 students
    • 40 teachers
    • 898 community members, with a dedicated focus on 488 women.

Facilities will see upgrades that go beyond infrastructure—aiming to improve quality of life, especially through improved water and sanitation systems.

Premier Stanley Siapu emphasized the significance of the project, stating, “This isn’t just about better school facilities, it’s about dignity, health, and our children’s future.”

With PGSD now active in all nine provinces of Solomon Islands, this expansion reflects a nationwide commitment to empowering local governments and delivering critical services to communities most in need.
