The Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID), through its Transport Infrastructure Management Service Division (TIMSD), has confirmed ongoing efforts to address the damaged Fiu Bridge in Malaita Province.
In response to the urgent situation, the Ministry is working closely with the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation to begin restoration works. An MID officer based in Auki has already been mobilized to the site, and an engineer will soon carry out a full assessment of the damage.

To maintain connectivity in the interim, a temporary wet crossing was constructed yesterday to allow detour access across the river. This crossing is suitable only for large pickup trucks.
Preparations are also underway to ship the necessary reinstatement materials to Auki to facilitate repairs. The Ministry has acknowledged the inconvenience caused to the traveling public along the North and East Malaita Road and appeals for patience and understanding as repairs continue.

Meanwhile, a new bridge design has been completed under the Solomon Islands Road and Aviation Project (SIRAP 2), although funding for construction is still pending.
