Over the past month, communities and schools across Central Malaita have taken major steps toward strengthening their climate resilience. Through inclusive, participatory processes, residents, men, women, and youth alike, have engaged in climate risk assessments and adaptation planning that place local voices and knowledge at the center of climate action.
These activities, supported by the Solomon Islands Knowledge-Action-Sustainability for Resilient Villages (SOLKAS) project, included climate change education sessions and community mapping exercises to identify key risks and vulnerabilities. Participants worked closely with Ward Development Committees, Provincial Government representatives, and the Provincial Disaster Officer to prioritize actions for climate adaptation.

Key areas of focus included addressing chronic water shortages, improving access to early warning systems for extreme weather events, and enhancing food security through climate-resilient agriculture techniques. The collaborative effort emphasized the importance of locally led solutions that reflect the needs and aspirations of each community.
The SOLKAS project, primarily funded by the Green Climate Fund with support from the Governments of Australia, New Zealand, and the Solomon Islands, aims to empower children, youth, and communities to build long-term resilience in the face of climate change. Central Malaitaβs progress marks a promising step forward in ensuring that vulnerable populations are better equipped to adapt to the challenges of a changing climate.
