Honiara, May 29, 2025 โ Students residing in the girls’ hostels at Solomon Islands National University (SINU), Panatina Campus, are facing ongoing power shortages that have created serious concern and frustration.
Since May 5, students living in hostels P2-03, P2-04, and P2-05 have experienced a complete lack of electricity, leaving them without lighting or the ability to charge essential devices such as laptops and phones. These issues have severely disrupted their academic preparation as the semester draws to a close.

P2-03 was the first hostel affected, reportedly without power for over a week before the issue spread to the neighboring hostels. In the case of P2-05, a combination of cash power shortages and unresolved electrical issues has left the building completely without power. According to one student representative who requested anonymity, the situation is worsening as students enter important weeks of study and final assignment submissions.

“The main issue is cash power, but there are also electrical faults that need urgent fixing. Some students have gone back to their homes just to access power for their schoolwork, while others crowd into the complex where even power points are limited or not functioning properly,” said the representative.

With Week 15 of the semester underway, students are finalizing assignments and preparing for examinations scheduled in Week 17. The representative has called on the SINU maintenance team to act swiftly to restore power to the hostels to ensure student safety and academic success.
โThe students pay for everything at SINU. They have the right to access basic services like electricity, especially during such critical times,โ the representative emphasized.

According to students, these hostels, which are reportedly managed by BICS and designated to accommodate SIG and other sponsored students, have been without electricity for approximately one to two months.
The lack of lighting and power during this important academic period, particularly with examinations approaching, has raised serious concerns about student welfare and academic preparedness.
Students are urging the university administration to prioritize this issue to ensure all students can study in a safe and supportive environment.
