Honiara Residents Spend More on Bus Fares as Short Route Trips Go Unchecked

Honiara, Solomon Islands – Many people in Honiara are upset about having to pay more money for shorter bus trips, while local authorities have done little to fix the problem.

The issue affects those on the eastern side of the city, and people in the West are also facing the same trouble. Buses are now charging $5.00 for a short trip from SDA to Lunga and $3.00 from SDA to KG, making daily travel more expensive for regular passengers.

On the evening of Friday 6 June, a local commuter saw a line of buses at the SDA bus stop, each one only going short distances and charging high fares. Many passengers, especially women, workers, and students, were left waiting and worried about getting home late.

Several women at the stop shared how this problem is unfair. They said short trips cause confusion and make people spend more than they should. They are asking the Honiara City Council (HCC) to step in and stop these illegal services.

“This is not fair. We are paying more money and waiting longer to get home,” one woman said. “HCC should deal with bus drivers who break the rules.”

The public is now being urged to work with HCC and report buses that do not follow proper routes. Locals say bus services in Honiara should be fair and affordable, not a daily struggle.
