Solomon Star Apologizes to TONGS for False Reporting

Solomon Star has issued a public apology to Tongs after falsely claiming in an article published on Saturday, 25th January, that Tongs was dissatisfied with the new hardware company, BNBM. The article, published without previous contact with Tongs, drove the company to threaten legal action against Solomon Star for defamation and false reporting.

In response, Solomon Star published an apology in its Tuesday, 28th January edition, retracting the claims made in the earlier article.

Counter to the report, Tongs clarified that it welcomes BNBM and competition in the hardware industry. The company stressed that having multiple hardware stores benefits customers by providing them with more choices when purchasing materials. Tongs noted that new hardware stores have been opening regularly in Honiara, with many already operating between Henderson and White River.

Tongs acknowledged that BNBM is unlikely to be the last new hardware store in Honiara and underlined that customers have varying choices when choosing where to shop. Some prioritize low prices over factors like quality or customer service, while others are willing to pay more for higher-quality materials that ensure durability against cyclones, earthquakes, termites, and other harsh conditions.

Referencing the December 2024 earthquake in Vanuatu, Tongs highlighted the importance of quality in construction materials, particularly in a region prone to natural disasters. The company quoted, “The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.”

Tongs also called for a level playing field in the hardware industry, expressing concerns that some businesses receive exemptions, giving them an unfair advantage over others. The company emphasized its commitment to fair competition, stating that it pays all required duties and taxes, invests in the Solomon Islands, and supports local charities, including hospitals.

“We don’t pay politicians for favors. All we ask is for the government to treat all hardware businesses equally and fairly,” Tongs added.

The company restated its dedication to maintaining high standards and contributing to the local economy while urging the government to ensure fairness and transparency in the industry.
