Construction is officially underway for the new Honiara Aviation Complex Building, an important milestone under the Second Solomon Islands Roads and Aviation Project (SIRAP2), led by the Ministry of Communication and Aviation (MCA) with World Bank support.
The contractor, China Railway Construction Engineering Group (CRCEG), has completed essential groundwork including rest and storage areas for workers and site noticeboards and is progressing on the site office. Temporary power and water utilities are also nearly complete.
Technically, the Geotechnical Investigation Report has been finalized, providing critical data to ensure the building’s structural strength and resilience. The final design has been submitted and is now under review by supervision consultant Egis. Foundation excavation has started, marking the beginning of the structural build and bringing the project’s total progress to 13%.
What’s next for the site includes final stakeholder approval of the design, soil replacement according to geotechnical standards, and the start of concrete foundation works.
Permanent Secretary of MCA, Alwyn Danitofea, said the new complex will house key aviation services, including MCA, CAASI, and Customs, Immigration, and Quarantine departments.
“This new aviation complex building will ensure aviation work can be conducted faster and more efficiently,” Danitofea said.
Once completed, the building will significantly improve service delivery and operational efficiency at Honiara International Airport, a key national infrastructure asset.
