The Ministry of Infrastructure Development’ (MID) Land Transport Management Service Division (LTMSD) is pleased to announce the appointment of a new Principal Works Officer to oversee the works operation in Kirakira town, Makira Ulawa Province (MUP).

Mr. Allan Dutton Hera’oa, a native of MUP, was appointed earlier this year and has recently completed his probation at the works facility in Honiara.

Kirakira previously only had a senior works supervisor. This new position demonstrates the ministry’s commitment to expanding manpower and strengthening infrastructure management throughout provincial centers.

During his probationary period, Mr. Hera’oa successfully completed a series of training programs with the Vehicle Inspection Unit, the Government Vehicle Maintenance and Servicing Unit, and administration and drive testing.

Mr. Hera’oa shared his plans upon his posting to Kirakira town:

“I will work closely with the provincial administration, police, and other stakeholders. There is a lot to address, including non-compliant vehicles, unlicensed drivers, and the development of work plans.”

He also indicated that his scope would extend to Ulawa Island, where there has been a recent increase in vehicle activity.
He highlighted ongoing logging operations and emphasized the importance of ensuring all vehicles are roadworthy and safe to operate.
“We have experienced accidents recently that resulted in fatalities, and addressing this issue will be my top priority in collaboration with the provincial police team,” Mr. Hera’oa stated.

Mr. Hera’oa also mentioned that he will seek additional support, including the provision of an outboard motor engine, to facilitate inter-island travel necessary for his duties.

Furthermore, he plans to conduct basic mechanical and safety training for drivers of government vehicles across various departments, including health and medical, land and housing, education, agriculture, and provincial administration in Kirakira.

Mr. Hera’oa previously worked with the provincial government in maintaining their vehicles and also has a track record working for private companies in the province.

MUP Provincial Premier, Hon. Stanley Siapu, and his team have expressed strong support for this new appointment, recognizing the need to improve government services and land transportation management for the growing urban center.
