HONIARA, SOLOMON ISLANDS — The rising cost of organic produce at Honiara’s Central Market is drawing frustration from residents, as reselling vendors who buy directly from Guadalcanal farmers at the market are accused of driving up prices at the Central Market surroundings, intercepting farmers who bring in fresh produce from their rural communities.
The vendors aggressively take the produces and offer low buying prices, which farmers often accept out of fear they won’t be able to sell elsewhere. The vendors then resell the same produce sometimes false parceling goods at inflated prices, leaving both the farmers and consumers at a disadvantage.
A local farmer say the practice is creating an exploitative system where rural growers are undervalued, and Honiara residents are forced to pay higher prices for basic organic food items like cassava, sweet potato, green vegetables, and fruit.
“This isn’t fair trade. Farmers are suffering, and so are our people,” said a resident.
Calls are now growing for the Guadalcanal Provincial Government to establish a dedicated space in Honiara for farmers to deal with vendors under supervision , cutting out intimidation and allowing fairer price control.
Many are also urging the Honiara City Council (HCC) to step in and implement policies to ensure local, organic food remains affordable and accessible.
As food costs continue to rise, many believe immediate intervention is needed to protect both producers and consumers and to restore fairness in the local food economy.
