Tsunami Waves Possible in Solomon Islands After Major Quake Near Russia

Honiara, 30 July 2025 – The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) has issued a regional tsunami advisory following a magnitude 8.7 earthquake near Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula. While a tsunami has not been confirmed to have reached Solomon Islands at this time, potential wave activity remains possible.

Authorities are urging residents, especially in coastal and low-lying areas, to exercise extreme caution as the situation is still being assessed. Tsunami waves can be unpredictable, the first wave is not always the largest, and subsequent waves may arrive much later.

What You Should Do:

  • Move to higher ground immediately if you feel strong shaking or notice unusual changes in sea level.
  • Stay away from beaches, rivers, and coastal areas until further notice.
  • Do not return to the shore until officials declare it safe, even if the sea appears calm.
  • Stay tuned to official sources such as the Solomon Islands Meteorological Service and National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) for updates.

No evacuation has been formally ordered as of now, but the public is advised to remain alert and prepared to act if conditions change.

This is a developing story, and authorities continue to monitor seismic and ocean data to determine the level of threat to Solomon Islands.
