The Apostolic Nuncio of the Holy See to the Solomon Islands, His Excellency Archbishop Maurizio Bravi, presented his Letter of Credence to the Governor General, His Excellency Sir David Tiva Kapu, at Government House today, Wednesday 6th August 2025.

Archbishop Bravi was recently appointed as the Holy Seeโ€™s representative to the Solomon Islands, with residence in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea.

In welcoming the Apostolic Nuncio, the Governor General said Solomon Islands values its longstanding partnership with the Holy Seeโ€”a relationship rooted in mutual respect and a shared commitment to the common good.

He acknowledged the Catholic Churchโ€™s significant contributions to the country, particularly in the areas of spiritual guidance, education, and healthcare, noting that these services have enriched countless lives and promoted the well-being of the nation.

โ€œThe Government of Solomon Islands deeply values this enduring commitment and looks forward to continued cooperation,โ€ Sir David stated.

The Governor General also reflected on the Catholic Churchโ€™s significant milestones this year, particularly the passing of Pope Francisโ€”whose compassion and advocacy for peace inspired many around the worldโ€”and the election of Pope Leo XIV as the 267th successor of Saint Peter.

โ€œSolomon Islands shares in the Churchโ€™s hope-filled journey under the leadership of Pope Leo XIV during this Holy Year of โ€˜Pilgrims of Hopeโ€™โ€”a theme that resonates strongly with our national aspirations for peace, unity, and mutual respect,โ€ he said.

He noted that these sentiments reaffirm the enduring friendship and cooperation that have characterized the relationship between Solomon Islands and the Holy See since the establishment of diplomatic ties on May 9, 1983โ€”now marking 42 years.

In response, Archbishop Maurizio Bravi said the occasion marked an opportunity to reaffirm the strength and goodwill that define the diplomatic relationship between the Holy See and the Solomon Islands.

He expressed the Holy Seeโ€™s commitment to maintaining close cooperation with Solomon Islands and continuing its support for the countryโ€™s development.

โ€œThe Catholic Church in this country remains dedicated to contributing meaningfully to societyโ€”particularly through spiritual guidance, education, and healthcareโ€”while upholding the integral development of the human person,โ€ Archbishop Bravi said.

He added that the Holy See is confident the ongoing contributions of the Catholic Church will continue to be appreciated by the Government and people of Solomon Islands.

โ€œIn the mission entrusted to me, I will work to ensure that our relations continue to thrive and grow stronger in the years to come,โ€ he concluded.
