FFA Members Gather in Tonga for WCPFC Scientific Committee Session

[Regional News]

FFA Members are in Tonga for the 21st Regular Session of the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC) Scientific Committee, running from 13–21 August 2025.

Ahead of the meeting, members have been holding preparatory discussions to finalise their positions and strategies. The session’s agenda includes reviewing tuna fisheries in the Western, Central, and Eastern Pacific, addressing data gaps, improving submissions, and refining bycatch estimates.

Key priorities include stock assessments for skipjack, bigeye, and other species, as well as advancing harvest strategies for major tuna stocks — measures that are vital for sustainable fisheries and ensuring fair economic returns for Pacific nations.

The WCPFC Scientific Committee meets annually to provide independent, science-based advice to the Commission, shaping decisions that safeguard the long-term health of highly migratory fish stocks in the region.
