Biosecurity Solomon Islands to Cease Phytosanitary Certificate Issuance for Betelnut and Mustard Stick at Honiara Airport

Honiara, Solomon Islands — Biosecurity Solomon Islands (BSI), under the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, has announced new changes to services at its Honiara International Airport office, effective Monday, 11 August 2025.

From this date, the Airport Biosecurity office will no longer issue phytosanitary certificates for betelnut and mustard stick. Instead, it will focus on:

Inspection Certificates for handicrafts and artifacts Phytosanitary Certificates for plant and plant products – frozen or cooked (excluding betelnut and mustard stick)

Travelers intending to carry betelnut or mustard stick overseas must now obtain phytosanitary certificates in advance from the Biosecurity Solomon Islands Head Office, located at the Catholic Chancery Building, opposite St. John School, Rove.
The Head Office can be contacted on Phone: 24657.

BSI is urging the public to plan ahead. Travellers are advised to visit the Head Office at least one day before departure to avoid delays at the airport.

“We thank the travelling public for their understanding and cooperation as we implement these changes to improve efficiency and compliance with biosecurity requirements,” said Biosecurity Solomon Islands in a statement.

These changes aim to streamline operations at the airport and ensure compliance with international biosecurity standards.
