From Slab to Library: Su’u School’s Journey of Rebuilding and Hope

What was meant to be a modest library upgrade became a complete rebuild, caused by unexpected challenges and powered by teamwork. Through determination, community effort, and support from local and overseas partners, Su’u School gained not just a new library building, but a renewed symbol of learning and hope.

It began with a collaboration between the Rotaract Club of Honiara and the Rotaract club of Paddington,  “Project R.I.S.E” was established. What started as casual discussions soon took shape through structured planning, driven by a shared vision to improve educational resources for Su’u School. Fundraising efforts gained momentum, bringing together donations of supplies and building materials that arrived in a shipping container in early June. By July, all items, including library resources and construction essentials, were safely transported to the school. Just five days before the arrival of the Paddington team, a daunting reality emerged, the intended renovation site had been reduced to nothing more than a bare concrete slab. Instead of discouraging the project, this moment became a turning point. Determined to deliver on their mission, the team, alongside Su’u staff and local community members, quickly shifted their approach and committed to building the entire library from the ground up.

In an impressive display of collaboration and hard work, the new library took shape in just 10 days. The finished building now stands not only as a physical structure filled with books and learning resources, but as a testament to resilience, adaptability, and the power of community action.

This achievement was made possible through the combined efforts of many, with special thanks to Honiara-based sponsors, Rotary Club of Honiara, Pasifiki Services Ltd, Unique Enterprises and the countless individuals and organizations whose generosity turned a challenge into a lasting gift for the Su’u School community.
