Solomon Islands Prime Minister Hon. Jeremiah Manele and Papua New Guinea Prime Minister Hon. James Marape signed the amended Agreement Concerning the Administration on Special Areas (1980) and the MoU on Combined Surveillance of the Common Maritime Border.
These frameworks ensure cooperation remains relevant to todayโs realities and future-ready.
โThe signing of the border frameworks reflects our commitment to build a resilient future rooted in cooperation, common understanding, mutual respect, and mutual prosperity,โ Prime Minister Manele said.
The agreements reaffirm shared responsibility to preserve traditional rights, movement, trade, and cultural exchange, while strengthening order, peace, stability, and good neighbourly relations.
In line with this yearโs Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting theme โ โUmi Tugeda: Act Now for an Integrated Blue Pacific Continentโ, the agreements embody the wantok spirit and close economic integration along the border.
This comes as Papua New Guinea prepares to celebrate its Golden Jubilee โ 50 years of Independence. โThe Golden Anniversary is a milestone not only for your nation but for the entire Pacific family,โ Prime Minister Manele said.
On behalf of the Government and people of Solomon Islands, he thanked Papua New Guinea for its partnership and goodwill.
โMay these frameworks serve as a foundation for deeper cooperation, stronger border communities, and an enduring friendship between our two nations,โ He added.
The signing marks a historic milestone in the long and enduring relationship between two Melanesian neighbours, connected by culture, blood, and geography.
