Auki, Malaita Province – 25 September 2025: Commissioner of the Correctional Service of Solomon Islands (CSSI), Mactus Forau, conducted a visit to the Auki Correctional Centre, accompanied by his Executive staff.
The purpose of the visit was to engage directly with officers on key matters relating to the CSSI Infrastructure development Plans and Human Resources, including transfers, training opportunities, officers’ benefits, and succession plans and promotions.
Commissioner Forau also used the opportunity to assess the performance and professional standards of both staff and inmates at the facility.
During a muster with Auki Correctional Centre staff, Commissioner Forau encouraged officers and management to maintain high levels of discipline and professionalism, emphasizing that such standards are essential to building public trust and confidence in the Correctional Service Solomon Islands.
Auki Correctional Centre Commandant, Inspector Andrew Wale, expressed gratitude for the Commissioner’s visit and acknowledged the moral and administrative support extended by the CSSI Executive Office.
As part of his visit, Commissioner Forau also paid a courtesy call on the Malaita Provincial Government Executive. In his discussions, he expressed appreciation to the Premier and his executive for allocating part of the provincial budget to support the operational needs of Auki Correctional Centre.
Commissioner Forau also highlighted the overcrowding issues in our Correctional Centre facilities are demanded and it is a need to expand our Correctional facilities to addressee overcrowded issues.
He also raised that Community Sentence Justice (CSJ) need to be introduce and implemented as a punishment could improve the strain on Correctional facilities by reducing overcrowding and expenses. It would hold offenders accountable for their actions while providing them with valuable skills and a sense of community belonging.
Provincial Permanent Secretary, Eric Ongoa George, reaffirmed the Provincial Government’s commitment to supporting CSSI’s development goals, including continued budgetary support for the Auki Correctional Centre.
In addition, Commissioner Forau made courtesy calls to the Malaita Provincial Police Commander, Auki Magistrates’ Court, and faith-based providers.
Commissioner Forau extended his sincere thanks to key stakeholders and local communities for their ongoing support and prayers toward the Auki Correctional Centre and CSSI as a whole.
