Outreach Efforts by the Psychiatric Team at the National Referral Hospital, Honiara

Community psychiatry plays a vital role in ensuring that individuals living with mental illness receive appropriate care and support within their own environments. Recognising this, the psychiatric team at the National Referral Hospital in Honiara has taken proactive steps to extend their services beyond the hospital, reaching out directly to communities to review and treat mentally ill relatives and wantoks (extended family and close friends).

A key figure in the Psychiatric Department and Head of Mental Health Service, NRH Dr Rex Maukera, recently highlighted the establishment of a comprehensive community outreach plan.

Dr Maukera said this initiative is designed to bridge the gap between healthcare providers and patients, bringing essential mental health services directly to those in need. The team’s approach involves visiting various communities across Honiara, engaging with families, and providing direct care and treatment to individuals suffering from mental illness.

He outlined the objectives of the outreach are;
• Promote Safety and Health: Address the pressing issues of safety and health among mentally ill individuals within the community.
• Comprehensive Patient Care: Strive to reach as many patients as possible, ensuring that no one is left behind due to logistical or social barriers.
• Support for Families: Equip families with the knowledge and skills necessary to care for and support their sick relatives effectively.

He further outlined, since the inception of the community outreach programme, the psychiatric team has reviewed and treated a significant number of patients in various neighbourhoods of Honiara. Dr Rex reported that, to date, a total of 216 patients have been reviewed and treated through these outreach activities.

“The outreach has not only improved access to mental health services but has also fostered a sense of inclusion and respect for individuals living with mental illness. By engaging directly with communities, the programme has helped reduce stigma and encouraged greater acceptance of those affected”, said Dr Maukera.

He reiterated that the ultimate aim of the outreach initiative is to ensure that all patients are treated with dignity and respect. The goal is to help mentally ill individuals reintegrate into their communities as valued citizens capable of contributing alongside others. The team remains committed to expanding their reach and continuing their mission to provide compassionate, community-based mental healthcare.

In reiterating Dr Rex’s sentiment, the Honourable Minister of Health & Medical Services, Dr Paul Bosawai, has called on relatives and family members to consult the psychiatric team as early as possible if one of their members, whether sibling, uncle, or auntie, behaves abnormally. He emphasized that seeking help early greatly improves the chances of effective treatment and recovery.

“This proactive approach can prevent further complications and ensures that individuals receive the support they need without unnecessary delay”, said Minster Dr. Bosawai.

Meanwhile, the psychiatric team’s community outreach efforts represent a significant step forward in the delivery of mental health services in Honiara. By actively engaging with patients and their families, the team is making a tangible difference in the lives of many, promoting recovery, inclusion, and wellbeing across the community.
