The Solomon Islands National University (SINU)has received a new Barracuda boat, a 60hp Outboard Motor (OBM), and a boat trailer last Friday marking an important milestone in the ongoing rehabilitation of the Poitete Campus.

The Poitete Campus, currently being upgraded with funding from the Indian Government, already has two land vehicles: a three-ton pickup truck and a Land Cruiser. With the addition of the boat and OBM, the campus now benefits from both land and sea transport, enhancing accessibility for staff and students.

Once operational, the new boat and OBM will be a vital asset for the Poitete Campus. Strategically located in the heart of North Kolombangara, the campus is equidistant from the key urban centres of Gizo, Noro, and Munda, making reliable sea transport essential.

The vessel will support:

Official Business: Providing dependable sea transport for administrative duties, official engagements, and logistical operations.
Staff Travel: Ensuring safe and efficient transport of SINU officials and visitors, including transfers to and from Munda and Gizo airports.

Academic Programmes: Enabling student excursions to nearby islands, supporting field-based learning, and enhancing the practical, hands-on components of the curriculum as the campus resumes full academic activities.

The newly acquired boat, OBM, and trailer are awaiting transportation from Honiara to the Poitete Campus. These were procured from Gizo Marine Services at a total cost of SBD $180,416.00.
