A police-marked vehicle from Central Police Station slid down a hill and crashed into a kitchen at Jericho in East Honiara today while officers were assisting in the search for a missing boy.

In a statement tonight, the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) Media Unit said the incident happened on Sunday, 8 March 2026, when officers were supporting Naha Police in locating the child.

According to police, the vehicle had been parked on a sloping hill while one officer left to gather information from the community about the missing boy.

When the officer returned and opened the vehicle door to brief the two officers inside, the vehicle suddenly began sliding down the hill.
Supervising Provincial Police Commander for Honiara City Police, Superintendent Mark Buga, said the driver attempted to stop the vehicle by pressing the brake and pulling the handbrake, but both failed.

โ€œThe driver tried to step on the brake and pull up the handbrake, but it did not work, causing the vehicle to slide down the hill and crash into a kitchen,โ€ Superintendent Buga said.
He confirmed that the three officers involved in the incident were not injured, although they were shaken by the accident. No members of the public were hurt.

Police also confirmed that the missing boy has since been located, and Naha Police are assisting him to receive medical attention.
Superintendent Buga said an inquiry file has been opened to determine the cause of the mechanical problem that allegedly led to the accident.

He also thanked the people of Jericho for their understanding and for helping secure the police vehicle while arrangements are made to tow it to the police garage.
