Honiara City Council today welcomed the new Australian High Commissioner, His Excellency (HE) Jeff Roach, during a courtesy visit at the Lord Mayor’s office in Honiara.
The Lord Mayor and senior officials warmly received His Excellency and expressed appreciation for the strong and long-standing partnership between Solomon Islands and Australia.
The Council acknowledged Australia as a key supporter of national development, both bilaterally and through international cooperation. It highlighted several important projects funded under the Solomon Islands Infrastructure Program, including the Central Market West Wing extension, White River Market, and the construction of five bus shelters. These projects have improved public services and made daily life easier for residents across the city.

The Council also recognised Australia’s support for health services through the Naha Urban Health and Birthing Centre. This facility will help deliver safer, higher-quality healthcare for women, children, and families in Honiara.
In addition, the Community Access and Urban Services Enhancement Project, supported by the World Bank and the Australian Government, was acknowledged for creating jobs and improving livelihoods throughout the city.
The Council further noted Australia’s investment in infrastructure, including the new High Commission Chancery at Lengakiki, which is contributing to the city’s growth and development.
Looking ahead, the Council expressed its interest in strengthening cooperation, especially in socio-economic infrastructure such as markets and bus shelters. Plans to upgrade the Central Market fish market and improve school bus shelters were also shared.
His Excellency Jeff Roach thanked the Lord Mayor for the warm welcome and reaffirmed Australia’s commitment to supporting Honiara’s continued development and future progress.
